Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) and Equipment Safety Assessment Project

Project Overview

  • Safety assessments are mandatory for conducting trials and demonstrations of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) and their associated equipment.
  • According to Article 19(3) of the "Act on the Promotion of Development and Commercialization of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships," authorized assessment agencies conduct these evaluations.

Legal Framework

  • Act on the Promotion of Development and Commercialization of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (hereinafter the "MASS Act"), its Enforcement Decree, and Enforcement Rules.
  • Regulations on the Trials and Demonstrations of MASS (hereinafter the "Regulations").

Definition of Safety Assessment for MASS and Equipment

  • Safety assessments verify the safety of MASS and related equipment intended for trials and demonstrations.

Assessment Targets:

  • MASS
  • Autonomous navigation systems and related systems constituting MASS (Article 8 of the Regulations).

Assessment Procedure

  • Applicants must submit applications to authorized agencies for MASS trials and demonstrations.
