Overview of the IMO GHG SMART programme
  • The IMO GHG SMART Programme is designed to enhance implementation capacity regarding international decarbonization regulations among maritime policy officials from Least Developed Countries(LDC) and Small Island Developing States(SIDS).
  • Each year, approximately 20 participants from around 15 countries take part in this programme.

  • Training Period: 2022–2026 (five years), comprising annual five-day practical training sessions held in Busan, Republic of Korea.
  • Organisers / Operational Support: International Maritime Organization (IMO), Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) of the Republic of Korea / Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority (KOMSA).
  • KOMSA serves as the lead agency responsible for organising and delivering practical training sessions in Busan.

  • The programme provides global climate capacity-building education, covering key areas including:
    • 1. International Regulatory Frameworks on Maritime Decarbonisation
    • 2. Republic of Korea’s National Action Plans (NAPs) for Maritime Decarbonisation
    • 3. Utilisation of International Climate Finance
    • 4. Eco-friendly Ship Technology Roadmap Development
    • 5. Republic of Korea’s International Shipping Decarbonisation Policies
    • 6. Development of Alternative Fuel Roadmaps
    • 7. Field Visits to Eco-friendly Maritime Facilities and Technology Sites
    • 8. Development of National Maritime Decarbonisation Action Plans
    • 9. Eco-friendly Port Technology Roadmap Development
    • 10. Interactive Participant Workshops and Group Exercises

WWorld Maritime University Scholarship Programme

  • Each year, two distinguished participants from the GHG SMART Programme are selected to receive scholarships for advanced master's degree studies at the World Maritime University (WMU).
  • In 2024, recipients included one female official from Zambia and one male official from Uganda.
